POLYURETHANE’S

We have a range of specialty polyurethanes that have been developed specifically by/for us. These are designed for specific situations as described below, but in the case of PLF and HandiKote, they have a much broader application than their original design.

HandiKote:

HandiKote was originally designed as a hand-applied coating for steel light and power poles to protect the ground line region from corrosion and abrasion/erosion damage. It is highly chemical resistant, abrasion resistant, whipper-snipper resistant and has excellent adhesion to galvanised steel, polyurea, fibreglass, concrete and wood / timber.

It comes in a pre-portioned easy-mix blister pack in handy sizes. It is an excellent touch-up option for polyurea and other elastomeric coatings. The substrate should be cleaned and corrosion removed as much as possible for best performance, but it is quite surface tolerant.

The good working time and high build make it excellent for fast return-to-service.

APPLICATIONS:

  • Pipes
  • Poles
  • Polyurea/urethane touch-up
  • Roof sealing (leak stopping)
  • Trailers
  • Ute / Truck bed liner (DIY)
  • Commercial waterproofing (small areas)

RECOMMENDED THICKNESSES:

For touch-ups, the thickness should reflect the thickness of the original coating, and there should be a minimum of 100mm radius of overlap onto sound coating. For stand-alone coating of poles and other steelwork, we recommend a minimum of 0.5mm thickness.

COLOURS:

Standard stock colours are grey and black. Colour stability is better than pure polyurea, but may still change colour.

ShieldFoam PLF:

PLF is short for Pole Lock Foundation. It is a 1:1 PU foam with fire retardant additives (it won’t sustain an above or underground fire), 13x expansion ratio, high strength (>750kPa compressive) and high percentage closed cell. It is moisture tolerant, easy to mix and makes a fantastic replacement for concrete or even spoil backfill of poles. It does not shrink away from the post/pole like cheaper alternatives will, which will improve the overall durability of the post!

It is also very useful for filling large holes, sink holes, etc. particularly if you need to bridge a hole to ensure the polyurea membrane is continuous in fiddly areas.

PLF has been shown to improve the early age foundation strength of poles by reducing the rotation by up to 50% with only half the hole filled with foam and the rest standard manually compacted backfill. This was compared to poles that had been properly compacted and left in service for more than a month before testing, while the foam backfill was done the day before testing.

APPLICATIONS:

  • Poles
  • Posts
  • Structural support where non-shrink is required.
  • Filling large holes with structural support similar to weak rock.

RECOMMENDED DEPTH:

We recommend using enough foam to fill the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of the embedment depth, with a minimum recommended depth of 800mm.

COLOURS:

The foam is standard unpigmented (almond).
